New Zealand Ski Fields: Ohua Snow Fields Review

Ideal for: Families on a budget, powder hounds and ski tourers
Snow: Consistently good

Ohau Ski Area is midway between Christchurch and Queenstown. Most skiers and boarders probably miss it in their mad dash between the Southern Lakes ski areas and Mt Hutt - but those who turn off the main highway to investigate won't be disappointed!

Lake Ohau Lodge and Ohau Ski Area are intimately connected, and people skiing at Ohau should take the opportunity to sample some of New Zealand's finest hospitality by staying at the lodge. It lies on the shores of Lake Ohau (Bring your fly rod) at the bottom of the mountain.

The ski area is clearly visible from the main highway running across the MacKenzie Country, and stopping to have a look just isn't the same as going up and trying it out for yourself.

Beginners are well catered for with a fixed grip tow and a platter lift. But these are unremarkable in that they are similar to learners areas everywhere.

What is remarkable is the range of advanced skiing and ski touring available to those who will hike just a little! The hike to "Ridge Run" is usually pre-stomped and the view alone justifies the climb. Ski tourers can explore adjoining bowls to the north and south which will be a highlight of any ski trip.

Experts not wanting to hike will love the High Traverse and Escalator runs - not least because everyone on the mountain will be watching!

Powder days will leave you panting, not because the snow's heavy, but because you'll be laying uncrossed tracks all day in light, dry, fine snow! Most of Ohau's patrons won't be powder hounds, which means all the more for you and yours.

You will find many families at Ohau, and most of them from Timaru. Obviously, these Timaru people aren't stupid - they know a good thing when they find it - and for some reason, Ohau seems to be a well kept secret in New Zealand skiing circles. I can't figure this out because Ohau has everything going for it; great terrain, excellent snow (the result of being in the lee of the Southern Alps), no crowds, great hospitality, a friendly and inviting atmosphere and on top of all this, it's only a brief detour from the main highway!
