The Remarkables Ski Area lies across the Wakatipu Basin from sister ski area Coronet Peak.
Here the emphasis is very definitely on joining in and having fun, especially if you're a beginner, intermediate or looking for serious adrenaline.
The Remarkables Ski Area enjoys three sunny sheltered bowls framed by towering peaks, and is known for its friendly atmosphere and relaxed feel. It's a great place to learn to ski with easy access to learner runs by an easy to use chairlift.
The Remarkables Ski Area has an enormous playground for beginners and learner skiers to explore! Alta chair is a chairlift ideal for learners, and allows a large amount of mileage to be added every day. Moving from Alta Chair to Sugar Bowl Chairlift is a natural progression which will not intimidate.
The Alta chutes which begin fairly mild in nature, progress towards the Double Cone peak of The Remarkables and each one gets more technical and difficult!
Runs like Terminator, Eliminator, Diangulator and Exterminator will leave your heart pumping. Diangulator for example, begins with a 2 metre drop-in and then dog-legs half way down - not for the faint hearted or those inexpert at successive jump turns. The Galipoli chutes will tempt those not tempted into the extreme alta chutes. These chutes can be access by climbing from the top of the Sugar Bowl Quad - even though the trail map suggests you can traverse there.
Toilet Bowl is an excellent open bowl - also a climb from Sugar Bowl. For those not interested in climbing, the East Face can be traversed to from the top of Shadow Basin, and the outstanding Homeward Bound run which finishes well below the ski area car park (shuttles operate continuously when Homeward Bound is open!) will bring a smile to anyone's face!
